Q: What initial spark inspired a collection of luxury ladder pull door handles?
Michelle Witherby: I have long aspired to redefine the architectural hardware industry. Being one of the few CEOs in this industry, it’s an honour and yet also a responsibility I feel to promote change where I can. One way to transform is certainly through creativity and design. Paul, Giles, and I wanted to step forward in a bold way and bring to market what our industry was lacking but also so desperately wanted: an exquisite line of ladder pull handles that are an embodiment of old-world craftsmanship and timelessness in design. ""
Q: Can you tell us about the materials used in The Witherby Collection?
Michelle Witherby: We use only the finest materials. The metal components are crafted from high-quality brass, which is known for its durability and integrity, with the center tube body constructed of aluminum on the leather family pull handle collection. The leather is genuine, top-grain bovine leather, which ages beautifully and adds a touch of sophistication to each piece. The combination of these materials results in door pulls that are both robust and elegant.""
Q: How does the craftsmanship of the Witherby Collection set it apart from other door pulls on the market?
Michelle Witherby: Each piece in the Witherby Collection is finished by hand, ensuring the highest level of detail and quality. Our artisans take great pride in their work, which is evident in the meticulous stitching and the perfectly weighted balance of each handle. Each piece delivers something distinctly original and beautiful in sight and touch, thereby acknowledging the design paradox—simplistic in design yet complex in craftsmanship. ""
Q: What challenges did you face during the design and production process?
Michelle Witherby: There were numerous steps we had to acknowledge ensuring we honoured our brand and this legacy in the most idealistic way possible. One of the main challenges was finding the right balance between form and function, also sourcing the highest quality materials and ensuring consistent craftsmanship can always pose as a complex process, but it was essential to meet our standards. We wanted the door pulls to be visually striking, comfortable, and easy to use. Achieving this required a lot of experimentation and refinement. For example, the smooth transition from the metal to the leather, to the hand-stitching detail, on to the location of access screws. It is a necessity for installation yet could detract visually from the aesthetic of the handle. Also, we came to launch with the complimenting finish combinations. Let’s not forget to mention packaging and branding. No stone was left unturned for this flagship line. ""
Q: What specific environments or design styles did you envision these non-locking ladder pulls enhancing?
Michelle Witherby: The Witherby Collection is versatile and can be used in various settings. In corporate environments, the sleek and modern designs can enhance any workplace and professional atmosphere. In luxury retail spaces, the elegant finishes can create an inviting and sophisticated ambiance. For residential and hospitality projects, the timeless elegance of the collection can add a touch of class to any home, hotel or spa.""
Q: What is your favorite piece in The Witherby Collection and why?
Michelle Witherby: It's hard to choose just one, but I am particularly fond of our Polished Chrome with Grey Leather ladder pull. The combination of the radiant reflective chrome finish with the soft, grain leather creates a striking contrast that I find very appealing and unique to its own. It's a perfect example of how the collection blends modern design with traditional craftsmanship.""
